GUPS is the largest umbrella body for all Professional Students in Ghana. It’s core mandate is to foster unity among Member Institutions, as well as fight for the common interests and rights of the ordinary Professional and Ghana Students. The 16th GUPS Delegates Congress which encountered massive participation of Delegates coming from across the country, came off Wednesday 16th, August and ended 19th, August, 2017.

However, programme lineups forming part of Congress activities started vehemently on the 17th of August 2017. The Opening Ceremony popularly referred to as grand durbar of Congress, recorded great Resource Persons and prominent Speakers who touched on the theme for the occasion and did justice to it.

Professor C.W.K Mireku the Dean of Students of University of Education Winneba, who was the Key Note speaker outlined several key points and stated Education is the heartbeat of every nation, therefore GUPS should involve well experienced leaders in their administration and should be ready to take up responsibilities for their actions.

A motivational speech was delivered by Mr. Kamal Deen Abdulai, a GUPS Alumnus and an old student of IBM&J and also the CEO of three powerful radio stations in the Northern Region who also doubled as the National Nasara Coordinator. His message was brief but worth touching and sharing , he said

“No matter ones political affiliation we should all work towards the development of Ghana”.

Adding up, he stated

“the days of Militancy must be left behind but diplomacy and dialogue should be adopted, when one fails in his or her journey of life he must rise again to grab his success that makes him or her expert and a winner”.

He voiced out on this categorically, and further went ahead to admonish all Professional Students present not to limit themselves to enable them unleash the GEM in them and to discover the opportunities around them. One word in his submission that was left in the mind of all was


More so, Lawyer John Kumah, the CEO of National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Plan (NEIP), passionately spoke with commendation for GUPS for its exceptional leadership portrayed. He also added an inspirational message that

“Every misfortune is an opportunity in disguise. Also we should learn to preserve our integrity and make our contributions known as well.”

He emphatically reiterated clearly that our life successes depend on oneself, and the knowledge acquired in our respective classrooms is just 30%, where as 70% of it depends on your very self and those you come across in your journey of life.

The programme continued with a Workshop organised by Google international and National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Plan (NEIP), where Delegates and other Participants of Congress, learned how to use the Google App and Internet for E-commerce. They were also taught on the importance of making good use of the internet and other Google platforms to sell their brands and promote their ideas and products, thereby creating wealth for themselves even without a direct employment.

Consequently, election was conducted to elect the next crop of leaders for the union who will take up the mantle of leadership from the Bismark Gyamfi’s led Administration for the next academic year. On records, this year’s election is tagged as one of the best elections as compared to previous GUPS elections. In effect After a free and fair elections, these are the Aspirants that got elected to stir the affairs of the union for the next academic year:

  • Linda Crassie – General Secretary Elect
  • Philip Yaw Boateng – Treasurer Elect
  • Antwi Ernest McCasland – Coordinating Secretary Elect
  • Mabel Ansah – Women’s Commissioner Elect
  • Stephen Aboagye  – Press and Information Secretary Elect
  • Emmanuel Boafo – Programmes and Projects Coordinator Elect
  • Harold Agyenim Boateng  – Financial Controller Elect
  • Steve Baah  – International Relations Secretary Elect
