Today ,Thursday, 27th December, 2018, will be a day for the 2018 referendum on the creation of additional six new regions in Ghana. These are; Western north, Bono East, Oti, North East, Savannah and Ahafo region.

The National Union of Ghana Students wishes to use the opportunity to encourage the youth and eligible voters mostly students to exercise their franchise as mandated of them in all these areas.

The constitution of the Republic of Ghana, Article 42 states;

‘every citizen of Ghana of eighteen years of age and above and of sound mind has the right to vote, and is entitled to be registered as a voter for the purposes of public elections and referenda’,

as such it behoves on all citizens eligible to vote at these six areas to exercise their franchise.

NUGS believes that exercising of franchise peacefully is the best way of depending on the democratic dispensation of our beloved country.

NUGS wishes to encourage students across the country eligible to vote to do so peacefully and must follow the required electoral rules and regulations that governs this referendum.

NUGS wishes to encourage the electoral commission of Ghana to be fair, firm and transparent and must ensure that all plans are in place to ensure a smooth and peaceful referendum.

NUGS as well wishes to use this opportunity to encourage the security of this country to ensure the maintenance of law and order at all these six areas that will be exercising their franchise in this referendum.

The union encourages all the students and youth eligible to vote to ensure the maintenance of peace at all these sectors.

We also encourage students of Ghana to spread the message of peace across the country.
