The leadership of National Union of Ghana Students, NUGS has applauded the government and Ministry of Education for dissolving the Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) following the unfortunate incidents that led to the destruction of properties on Monday, October 22nd, 2018.

Arguably, NUGS believes that this firm action taken by the government on Thursday, October 25th is a welcoming one from the rank and file of NUGS and its constituents. We want to state emphatically that this new development clearly depicts government’s commitment to championing the safety and welfare of the ordinary student of Ghana.

While we acknowledge the sudden position of the SRC President, the National Union of Ghana Students wishes to urge all stakeholders to rally behind the Interim Governing Council, chaired by Nana Effah Apenteng, Paramount Chief of the Bompata Traditional Area to deliver on its mandate by proffering solutions to the impasse and restore the image of the KNUST.

NUGS is by this statement urging the government of the Republic and the Interim Governing Council to among others;

1. Ensure that a forum be organized for the Students and to listen to their concerns directly.

2. That the Interim Governing Council should as a matter of urgency put in mechanisms to ensure that academic work resumes expeditiously for students of KNUST to benefit from their education.

3. That government should provide a safer environment, conducive enough for teaching and learning to commence on the KNUST Campus.

As the ultimate students and youth movement mandated to ensure the welfare of students of Ghana locally and in the diaspora, we are of firm belief that the Interim Council will put in place strict measures that will restore, prevent and respond adversely to the root causes that led to the unfortunate closure of the university.

NUGS wishes to renew its commitment and assurances of its highest esteem to the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana.
