The National Union of Ghana Students’ on Monday, 3rd June 2019 took part in the No Tobacco Day 2019 celebration organized by the Food and Drugs Authority.

The programme was under the theme

“Tobacco and Lung Health “

at the Conference room of the Food and Drugs Authority.

The program had representatives from the World Health Organization, Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Civil Society Organizations and students.

The delegation from NUGS included Mr. Tinkaro Asare Osei, President of NUGS and Mr. Shadrach Owusu, the Coordinating Secretary.

In the speech by Mr. Tinkaro Asare Osei he called for an urgent radical approach in dealing with Tobacco or Shisha also known as Hookah.

Citing the new Ghana Health Service report that 1.3 percent of students at the junior high school level in Ghana smoke shisha, he noted with great alarm the threat this bodes for Ghana and the need to strenuously combat it.

“It was really more alarming and challenging to note that 1.3 percent of students at the junior high school in Ghana smoke shisha through a report from the Ghana Health Service even after all the education of its harmful nature. We at NUGS call for an urgent attention in dealing with this issue “,

President Tinkaro Asare Osei stated.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority Mrs. Mimi Darko commended NUGS on their desire to partner their outfit on a Campaign against Tobacco or Shisha and expressed strong hope that subsequent administrations will continue on this path.
